What is a Community Supported Bakery (CSB): A Community Supported Bakery is based on the same concept of a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, but for bread. With a CSB, customers have the opportunity to retain the weekly purchase of bakery products from Halcomb’s Knob at the conclusion of the regular Farmers Market season. Our CSB engages our bakery and community members in a mutually beneficial relationship. Share costs are calculated by the average value of the weekly deliveries by the number of weeks in the season. Each week, members pick up their CSB bag(s) of bread at a designated time and location.
Why Support a CSB: Supporting local value-added producers, such as the Bakery at Halcomb’s Knob, is an opportunity for you, the community to pledge your support to our bakery so we may continue winter production of the artisan breads, and in-turn supporting local suppliers of our grist-milled community produced ingredients.
Why a CSB is Good for You: CSB gives members access to healthy food – locally produced, nutritious, delicious, and fresh. What’s more, CSB directly connects with a community who have similar values. A CSB pick up is a great place to make friends and to learn from others the options for connecting with area producers and farmers. Finally, CSB is a great opportunity to financially support and put into practice some of the causes that you care about: a healthy local food economy and the success of small artisan producers and farmers.
What to Expect: The cost of the Community Supported Bakery differs depending on the quantity of loaves per share.
For Madison County residents and EKU staff and faculty, shares are delivered weekly on Thursday mornings to Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Jones 106, Richmond, KY. “EKU” customers shall pick-up their bread bags between 11 AM on Thursday and 4 PM on Friday. All orders must be picked up by Friday at 4 PM. * For deliveries when EKU is closed for breaks and/or holidays, an alternative location and pick-up time will be announced.
Garrard County residents, shares will be delivered weekly by mid morning on Thursdays to a location yet to be determined.
If you are afraid that you will be out of town, you can designate a pickup person, you can even designate a neighbor and surprise them with fresh bread.
Each week, share-holders will be asked to submit their variety selection by Monday afternoon at 4 PM. If a customer fails to make a selection of their bread variety for the week, the Bakery at Halcomb’s Knob will select one of its healthy choice varieties for the weekly share delivery (Cranberry Walnut Bread, Hearty Whole Wheat Bread, Rosemary Dill Bread, Light Wheat Bread, Cinnamon Raisin Bread, and Garlic Cheddar Bread). Additional loaves and/or specialty rolls may be added to the customer’s weekly share as requested. All special orders must be pre-paid prior to product delivery.
There is a limited number of slots for each CSB rotation. You will be registered for the full Community Supported Bakery rotation once we receive your order and 50% deposit. Our 30 week CSB rotation for 2018 will begin on October 4.
Can I Drop Out: When you commit for a season, we use that income and information to purchase the bakery’s winter supplies and equipment. Therefore, we do not allow drop-outs. If you are dissatisfied with your CSB for any reason, please engage us in conversation and we will try to solve the problem.
What Happens if I Miss a Pick-Up: If you know in advance you will not be able to pick up your share, either send a friend or neighbor, or let us know by email at least 24 hours in advance, and we will help find a solution.
